The work stands in the tradition of Central European research on cathedral chapters, in which Brixen assumed a pioneering role at an early stage through the groundbreaking studies of Leo Santifaller and his student Karl Wolfsgruber. It complements these works, which focus on the members of the cathedral chapter, by extending the investigation to the lower clergy. Before 1803, when the chapter members were heavily occupied with secular duties, this group was an essential bearer of the cathedral liturgy; from 1803 to 1826, when the cathedral chapter was dissolved, it was its sole bearer. The canons of the collegiate foundation in the cloister, which existed until 1808, are also taken into account. Methodologically, the study builds on the highly developed Central European research on collegiate churches of recent years (Peter Moraw, Enno Bünz, Oliver Auge); it also incorporates an approach based on the history of liturgy. In its comprehensive overall conception, it may claim to break new ground within the Germania Sacra. The thorough prosopographical analysis of the data broadens the perspective in many directions.
