About the event

Neither Walther ever lived in Bolzano nor Dante in Trento. Nevertheless, both of their statues stand in the heart of their respective cities and belong as a matter of course to the cultural inventory of both the South Tyrolean and the Trentino provincial capitals. The lecture is dedicated to the cultural-political background that was decisive for the erection of the Walther Monument in Bolzano (1889) and the Dante Monument in Trento (1896). It takes a look at the cultural dispute over remembrance that has been fought out over the decades over these two representatives of nationalised values. All in all, on the occasion of the Dante commemorative year, the view of these specific places of remembrance should be sharpened - only in this way can they be used anew as resources for a reflexive historical culture.
